Home Ministry team arrives in Humla to investigate inter-district border dispute

KATHMANDU: A committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs has arrived in Simkot, Humla, to investigate the border dispute between Humla and Bajura districts and the clashes that erupted in the disputed Lampata area last month.

The team, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Bimal Raj Paudel, reached Simkot on Sunday, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Shankar Khadka.

The committee has been tasked with establishing the facts surrounding the boundary dispute and the subsequent clashes before submitting its findings to the Home Ministry.

During its visit, the team is scheduled to hold consultations with local residents, individuals involved in the incident, elected representatives, political leaders, and civil society members from areas along the disputed border.

Tensions flared between residents of Humla and Bajura from May 16 to 18 over disagreements regarding the district boundary in Lampata. The dispute intensified after work began on the construction of a police beat in the area.

The Sudurpashchim Provincial Government had allocated Rs 4 million in the current fiscal year for the construction project. The clashes left four people injured, who were later rescued by helicopter.

On May 25, the government formed separate committees led by Susheel Dangol of the Department of Survey and SSP Paudel to investigate the dispute and recommend solutions.
