US lowers Nepal travel advisory to Level 2, urges caution

KATHMANDU: The United States Department of State has downgraded its travel advisory for Nepal to Level 2, stating that travel is permitted with increased caution.

The revision comes after the end of nationwide protests that began in September 2025 following the Gen-Z movement. While the overall security situation has improved, the advisory notes that the risk of civil unrest and sudden demonstrations still remains.

According to the updated notice, protests across the country have largely subsided, and Nepal’s security environment is currently stable. However, it warns that demonstrations may still occur, particularly in urban areas, and could escalate quickly.

The advisory urges travelers to avoid large gatherings and follow instructions from local authorities at all times.

It also highlights concerns over limited healthcare services in Nepal. Although hospitals in Kathmandu are relatively better equipped, issues such as overcrowding, shortages of medical supplies, and the possibility of upfront payment for treatment may arise.

The US government has advised its citizens to carry necessary medications, obtain health insurance, and ensure coverage for medical evacuation. Travelers are also encouraged to prepare for the possibility of seeking treatment abroad in case of serious medical emergencies.

Additionally, the advisory points out that Nepal is vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides. It specifically warns of increased risks during the monsoon season from June to September, including sudden flooding, landslides, road blockages, and infrastructure damage.

Travelers are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), monitor local news, and remain cautious throughout their stay.

Despite the downgrade, the advisory emphasizes that travelers should remain vigilant while visiting Nepal.
