Police allege RPP leaders attempted to seize parliament building

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Police have accused Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leaders of attempting to seize the Parliament building during last Friday’s violent pro-monarchy protest in Kathmandu.

In a letter to Speaker Devraj Ghimire, police stated that RPP General Secretary and MP Dr. Dhawal Shamsher Rana, along with Rabindra Mishra and Durga Prasai, incited protesters to move beyond their scheduled rally point and storm key government institutions.

According to the letter, the leaders urged demonstrators to “march toward the Parliament building and other vital state institutions to overthrow the republican structure and restore the monarchy.”

The protests, initially staged at Kathmandu’s Tinkune area, escalated into violent clashes with police.

The letter also detailed widespread vandalism and arson targeting government buildings, private residences, media houses, and commercial establishments, including the Bhatbhateni supermarket chain.

The violence resulted in the deaths of journalist Suresh Rajak and transport worker Sabin Maharjan.

Police further alleged that Rana and his associates did not attempt to control the crowd but instead provoked them into clashing with security forces.

The letter stated that protesters used sticks, stones, and makeshift weapons, injuring multiple officers.

Speaker Ghimire read out the police letter during Monday’s House of Representatives session, informing lawmakers of Rana’s arrest under parliamentary rules.
