KATHMANDU: Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has condemned the violent protests that erupted in Kathmandu on Friday, labeling them as an attack on democracy.

Speaking after receiving a memorandum from the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Koshi Province on Monday, Karki strongly criticized the violence, particularly the targeting of journalists.

He called the killing of media personnel a well-planned attack against democracy and reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists.

“The so-called protests in Kathmandu were not demonstrations but a series of lootings carried out with a criminal mindset,” he said, urging all sectors to stand against such violence.

FNJ representatives, including Koshi Province President Bharat Khadka and District President Sushila Pathak, submitted the memorandum demanding professional security and protection for journalists.

In response, Karki assured that he would coordinate with the central government to ensure their safety and compensation.

He further urged journalists to resist attacks on the republic and stand firm in defending the democratic system.
