Oli identifies four forces targeting UML, calls for united resistance

KATHMANDU: The ruling CPN-UML has concluded that the party is under attack from multiple directions, according to party Chair KP Sharma Oli.

This assessment is mentioned in the intra-party directive Oli issued on Monday night, following the party’s 9th Central Committee meeting held from July 21 to 23.

The directive claims that there is a coordinated campaign of encirclement and misinformation targeting the UML and its leadership.

Oli has identified four distinct forces that, according to him, are attacking the party. He urged party members not to fall for such narratives and to respond with strong resistance.

The four forces targeting UML, as per Oli are forces opposed to patriotic positions: Oli claims these groups aim to weaken patriotic leadership in Nepal to serve their own interests, reactionary forces seeking the return of monarchy: these groups, frustrated by UML’s role in preventing the restoration of the monarchy, are said to be spreading propaganda, rival leftist parties: referring specifically to the Maoist Centre, the UML alleges that competing left-wing parties feel threatened by UML’s influence and are covertly attacking the party, and groups aiming to build new alternative forces: Oli accused these factions of embracing populism and anarchy while spreading misinformation against the UML.

The party believes that the recent debates over term limits and a proposed age cap of 70 years for leadership are part of a calculated effort to attack its leadership.

Oli dismissed allegations of ‘statute tampering’ as misinformation based on minor errors in printed copies of the party charter.

Central Committee member Karn Bahadur Thapa had earlier claimed that at least three different versions of the statute had been printed since the 10th General Convention in Chitwan.

Oli also warned that the recent controversy surrounding former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s alleged role in internal party affairs posed a threat to party unity. He urged members to refrain from further escalating the issue.

“The conspiracy to weaken the party and its leadership has peaked,” said Oli. “The entire party must stand united against these planned attacks and misleading propaganda.”

He called on members to resist such tendencies and focus on creating favorable conditions for ‘Mission 2084’, referring to the next general election.

He also warned against internal dissatisfaction, confusion among leaders, and coordinated attacks on party leadership.
