KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has asserted that Nepal’s federal democratic republican system will remain intact despite any attempts by former King Gyanendra Shah to restore the monarchy.
Speaking at the 8th National Convention of the Nepali Writers’ Association in Lumbini on Saturday, Deuba said Nepal is firmly in favor of the republic and that the former king lacked both the intention and the ability to become a constitutional monarch.
Referring to the violent royalist protests in Tinkune on Friday, Deuba strongly criticized the former king.
“Yesterday’s incident was a riot. Kathmandu was attacked in a chaotic manner. If former King Gyanendra is doing this now, imagine what he would do if he were reinstated as king,” said Deuba.
