RPP Nepal Chair Kamal Thapa questions handling of Tinkune violence

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Nepal Chair Kamal Thapa has raised serious concerns over the violent incidents that erupted during the royalist demonstration in Tinkune on Friday.

In a press release issued on Saturday, Thapa condemned the vandalism and arson but also questioned the police response and the possibility of a conspiracy to discredit the monarchy restoration movement.

Thapa posed key questions, including:

  • Why did police fire tear gas indiscriminately into private homes and at the rally?
  • Why was tear gas fired on the stage even before the program began?
  • Was there a deliberate attempt to escalate the situation into violence?
  • Was this a pre-planned effort by the government or another entity to sabotage the movement?

He expressed sorrow over the deaths of Sabin Maharjan, allegedly killed by police bullets, and journalist Suresh Rajak, who died after being trapped in a burning building set on fire by protesters. Thapa called for a fair investigation and action against those responsible.

Furthermore, he criticized attempts to link former King Gyanendra Shah to the events and demanded the immediate release of RPP leaders, including Rabindra Mishra, Dhawal Shamsher Rana, Nawaraj Subedi, and Swagat Nepal, who remain in police custody.
