KMC to launch digital literacy program for residents

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is set to launch a digital literacy training programme aimed at helping residents safely conduct digital transactions and navigate online services.

KMC spokesperson Nabin Manandhar said the initiative is being introduced to protect citizens from internet-related risks and strengthen their confidence in using digital platforms.

“With the growing use of information technology, every individual should understand proper internet use and basic digital security,” he said. “Technology makes life easier, but if not used cautiously, the risks increase equally.”

Manandhar noted that the training is essential to ensure easier access to public services and to safeguard residents from potential cyber threats. He added that effective e-governance—an ongoing government priority—requires a digitally capable population.

“People must be made aware of cybersecurity. This responsibility is fulfilled through such training programmes,” he said, emphasizing that a digitally aware citizenry is key to ensuring transparency in governance.

According to Anirudra Nepal, head of KMC’s Information Technology Department, the programme will begin in the first phase across wards 17, 18, 19, and 29 before gradually expanding to other wards.

The training will cover essential digital skills, including creating strong passwords, using one-time passwords (OTP), identifying viruses and suspicious links, understanding antivirus protections, and adopting safe browsing practices.

KMC officials said the programme is designed to equip residents with the knowledge needed to protect their personal data and navigate digital services securely.
