NHRC to remain open during Dashain holidays

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has announced that it will remain open during the Dashain holidays from 11 am to 2 pm to receive complaints and monitor urgent incidents of human rights violations.

Issuing a press release on Sunday, NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tika Ram Pokharel said the commission’s central office in Harihar Bhawan, Lalitpur, along with its provincial and branch offices, will continue operations during the Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath festival breaks.

“The arrangement has been made to ensure that complaints related to human rights violations can be lodged and emergency monitoring carried out even during the holidays,” the statement read.

The commission urged the public to immediately inform the nearest NHRC office if any rights violations occur.

Noting that public holidays and festivals often cause travel difficulties for citizens, as well as increases in crime, inflation, black-marketing, and disruptions in public services and supplies, the NHRC stressed the need for effective state vigilance.

“To streamline service delivery and strengthen law and order during the festive period, the commission directs the government to act with efficiency,” the statement added. “The NHRC also calls on all concerned to cooperate with the government in maintaining peace, security, and smooth service delivery.”
