Cabinet meeting taking place today

KATHMANDU: The regular meeting of the Cabinet is scheduled to take place today at 5 p.m. at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar.

One of the key agendas could be the reconstitution of the recommendation committee for the appointment of the governor.

Following the resignation of committee member Bijay Nath Bhattarai, a new member must be appointed to fill the vacancy. Only after the committee is complete can it recommend candidates for the governor’s post.

The recommendation committee will propose three names, after which the Council of Ministers will make the final decision on the appointment.

Due to the delay in appointing a new governor, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba held discussions on Saturday.

Reports suggest they have reached an agreement to finalize the appointment within this week.

Sources indicate that the ruling parties—Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—have agreed to appoint Dr. Gunakar Bhatta, who recently resigned as Executive Director of Nepal Rastra Bank, as the new governor.
