UML doubts govt’s ability to hold elections on time

KATHMANDU: UML leaders have concluded their first direct talks with Prime Minister Sushila Karki since the Gen-Z movement transformed the political landscape.

General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali, and former Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula met the Prime Minister at Baluwatar on Thursday.

After the meeting, Bartaula said the UML firmly believes that the dissolution of the House on September 12 must be tested by the Supreme Court. He stated that the party is ready to follow whatever decision the court delivers, but stressed that the judicial process must move quickly.

Bartaula also expressed doubt about the government’s readiness to conduct elections on March 5 as announced. He said the preparations and pace of work so far do not inspire confidence.

According to him, UML has “not even ten percent confidence” that the current government will be able to organize the election on the declared date.
