Acid attack survivor Muskan Khatun joins Nepali Communist Party

KATHMANDU: Acid attack survivor Muskan Khatun has entered politics, joining the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) on Thursday. She was formally welcomed at a party unity ceremony held at the National Assembly Hall. Party leaders are preparing to appoint her as a central member.

Alongside Muskan, Rajendra Shrestha, President of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Federal Council, was also welcomed by NCP coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and other party leaders.

NCP Co-chair Madhav Kumar Nepal announced that Muskan would be made a central member of the party. Known for her work as a human rights activist, Muskan has long advocated for victims of violence and acid attacks.

Muskan, a resident of Chapkaiya-3 in Birgunj Metropolitan City, was attacked with acid in September 2019, while going to school. Two local boys, Shamsad Mia and Majid Alam, both 16, were arrested in connection with the attack. Shamsad reportedly carried out the attack after being rejected when he proposed to her.

The attack severely injured the right side of her body. After a long period of treatment and recovery, Muskan has emerged as a prominent human rights advocate and now steps into the political arena.
