KATHMANDU: Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi called Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane and senior leader Balendra (Balen) Shah on Monday to congratulate them on their decisive victory in Nepal’s elections.

Modi spoke to Lamichhane and Shah as the RSP was poised to secure a two-thirds majority, including 125 direct seats in the House of Representatives, with results of both the direct and proportional representation votes nearing finalization.

“Had warm telephone conversations with Rabi Lamichhane, Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Balendra Shah, Senior Leader of the RSP. Congratulated both leaders on their electoral victories and RSP’s resounding success in the Nepal elections,” PM Modi wrote on X (Twitter).

He added, “Conveyed my best wishes for their forthcoming new government and India’s commitment to work with them for the mutual prosperity, progress, and well-being of our two countries. I am confident that with our joint endeavors, India-Nepal relations will scale new heights in the years ahead.”

Earlier, an understanding had been reached between Lamichhane and Shah that Balen Shah would become Prime Minister following the election.
