Air pollution rises in Kathmandu Valley as winter sets in

KATHMANDU: With the onset of winter, air pollution in Kathmandu Valley is steadily increasing.

Meteorologists and environmental experts say that reduced rainfall and lower wind speeds during this season contribute to the accumulation of dust and smoke in the valley.

Local activities such as burning crop residue in fields for agriculture further add to the pollution levels. Vehicle emissions, dust from roads, and harmful gases from industrial activities are other major contributors, making Kathmandu one of the most polluted cities globally during this period.

From surrounding hills, the layer of dust and smoke over the valley is clearly visible, highlighting the severity of the air quality crisis.

Authorities continue to urge residents to take precautions, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, as air quality worsens during the winter months.
