Department of Prison Administration asks escaped inmates to return by Oct 6

KATHMANDU: The Department of Prison Administration has issued a final appeal for prisoners who escaped during the Gen Z movement protests on September 8 and 9 to voluntarily return to prison by October 6.

The Administration stated that efforts are underway to locate and return the escapees in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders. A dedicated Task Force for Searching and Arresting Escaped Prisoners has also been formed to expedite this process.

According to Chomindra Neupane, Director and Spokesperson of the department, a significant number of prisoners remain at large. He warned that those who fail to return within the given deadline will face legal action under existing laws.

The Department has also urged the public to assist in locating the fugitives, as per a directive from the Home Minister. It emphasized that individuals who hide, shelter, or assist escaped prisoners will also be held legally accountable.

To strengthen enforcement, district offices have been instructed to regularly update the status of unreturned prisoners and report to higher authorities. Local governments and representatives have been asked to actively participate in search efforts, maintain inter-agency coordination, and implement necessary mechanisms.

The Department is also working to disseminate the task force’s and security agencies’ contact numbers through media, social platforms, and other channels, encouraging the public to report any information regarding escaped prisoners.
