Excavator operator killed in landslide at Darkhola Hydropower project

MYAGDI: An excavator operator lost his life after being buried in a landslide while working on road construction for the Darkhola Hydropower Project in Muna, Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality-3 in Myagdi district.

According to police, 32-year-old Khemraj Kumal, a resident of Chapakot Municipality-8 in Syangja, died on the spot when a landslide struck as he was digging the Kunauta–Dar Shilbang road, which is being built to lay the hydropower project’s pipeline.

Police Assistant Inspector Bikram Tiwari of the Takam Police Post said Kumal’s body was found trapped inside the excavator.

Preparations are underway to send the body to the Provincial Hospital in Beni for a postmortem. Locals and police personnel retrieved the body from the landslide debris.

The excavator was completely destroyed by the sudden landslide that fell from above while digging work was underway.

The 6.5-megawatt Darkhola Hydropower Project, being constructed by Darkhola Hydropower Limited, is currently working to install a penstock pipe by building a road along Lampus Bhir (cliff).
