Devotees flock to Mata Tirtha to honor mothers

KATHMANDU: Across Nepal, people are celebrating the festival of Mata Tirtha Aunsi today by honoring their mothers with sweets, love, and reverence.

Observed annually on the Aunsi (new moon) of the Baishakh Krishna Paksha, the day holds deep emotional and spiritual significance.

Rooted in classical traditions, the festival is regarded as a time to express devotion, gratitude, and respect towards mothers—who, according to scriptures, are placed above even teachers, scholars, and fathers. Many mark the day by offering sweets to their mothers and seeking their blessings for health, prosperity, and happiness.

In keeping with tradition, a large fair is being held at Mata Tirtha, a sacred site located in Chandragiri Municipality. Since early morning, devotees have been flocking to the area to pay homage, perform rituals, and remember their mothers—both living and departed.

The Mata Tirtha site, deeply associated with maternal devotion, becomes a focal point of worship every year, drawing crowds who come to offer prayers and reflect on the unconditional love and sacrifices of motherhood.
