GULMI: Eleven families have been displaced in Gulmi due to floods, landslides and strong winds triggered by continuous rainfall. Three livestock also died after sheds collapsed in the disasters.
According to Gulmi District Police Office information officer Subarna Adhikari and Deputy Superintendent of Police Birendra Bir Bishwakarma, families whose homes were damaged or who were at risk from floods and landslides were moved to safer locations with the assistance of police and local residents.
Seven families living and operating shops along the riverbank in Lamachaur, Ridi, Ruruchetra Rural Municipality-1, were moved to relatives’ homes after the water level in the Kali Gandaki River rose.
Two families were displaced after a landslide struck above their homes in Seugha, Resunga Municipality-4.
DSP Bishwakarma said six people, including four members of Tej Bahadur Khatri’s family and two members of Amkala Khatri’s family, were rescued with the assistance of police and local residents and moved to a nearby cattle shed.
In Madane Rural Municipality-6, Purkot Daha, Santosh Chudara, 37, and his family were displaced after strong winds and rain blew away the tin roof of their house.
Similarly, the family of Khem Bahadur Karki, 44, of Remi, Chandrakot Rural Municipality-4, was displaced after their cattle shed collapsed. Two calves tied inside the single-storey temporary shed were buried and killed.
In Musikot Municipality-1, Pakhera, a single-storey temporary cattle shed belonging to 27-year-old Sushila BK collapsed, killing a female goat.
Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force have stepped up rescue operations in areas affected by landslides in view of the risks posed by floods and landslides. Police said rescue teams had been deployed in vulnerable areas in a timely manner.
The District Administration Office, Gulmi, has urged residents to remain highly alert as the risk of floods and landslides persists in various parts of the district.
Following a rise in the water level of the Kali Gandaki River due to continuous rainfall, residents in high-risk areas along the riverbank in Ridi Bazaar, Ruruchetra Rural Municipality-1, have been moved to safer locations.
According to DSP Bishwakarma, a police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Man Bahadur Bishwakarma from the Area Police Office, Ridi, has been deployed for rescue and relocation operations.
After the river level rose sharply on Saturday morning, the District Administration Office urged residents living near rivers and streams to remain alert and stay in safe locations. The rising water level in the Kali Gandaki has increased concern among residents of Ridi.
