Govt to establish welfare fund for mountain guides

KATHMANDU: The government is set to introduce a welfare fund aimed at providing social security and promoting the mountaineering profession, announced Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey.

Minister Pandey emphasized the need to support mountain guides and their contributions to Nepal’s tourism sector when speaking at a felicitation program on Sunday.

The event, organized by Chumnubri Rural Municipality of Gorkha, honored climber Phunjo Jhangmu Lama for her remarkable achievement of climbing Mount Everest in the shortest time by a woman—14 hours and 31 minutes.

In addition to Lama, other mountaineers, including Mingmar Tshering Lama, Nangsel Chhodon Lama, Nanu Maya Gurung, Diki Lhamu Lama, and Yukta Gurung, were also recognized for their significant contributions to mountaineering.

The establishment of the welfare fund highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring climbers’ social security and encouraging their endeavors in promoting Nepal as a premier destination for adventure tourism.
