Senior citizens’ knowledge, experience are source of inspiration: President Paudel

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has said that senior citizens enriched with knowledge, skills, and experience are a valuable source of inspiration and play an important role in societal development.

Extending best wishes to all Nepali citizens at home and abroad for good health, longevity, and a dignified life on the occasion of National Senior Citizens Day, 2082 BS, the President emphasized the need for respect, care, and proper protection of senior citizens, describing them as sources of love, affection, and compassion.

President Paudel expressed confidence that the observance of National Senior Citizens Day would encourage collective efforts to ensure a dignified life and sustainable livelihood for the elderly.

He urged families, communities, organizations, and all three tiers of government to work together to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, skills, and experience from the older generation to the younger ones, while maintaining respectful behavior toward senior citizens.

The Head of State also called on concerned stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of government-sponsored social security schemes, facilities, and entitlements aimed at the protection and welfare of senior citizens.

Meanwhile, in a message issued on the same occasion, Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav said that senior citizens should be viewed as a source of wisdom and awareness rather than as a burden. He stressed the importance of developing senior citizen-friendly infrastructure, strengthening social security, promoting community support, and improving the mental health of the elderly to preserve their dignity and well-being.

The government observes National Senior Citizens Day every year on Poush 11 (December 26) in accordance with the Bikram Sambat calendar, with the aim of promoting respect for senior citizens and raising awareness about their issues. This year, National Senior Citizens Day 2025 is being marked with various programs across the country under the slogan “Our Shared Campaign: Respect and Honour for Senior Citizens.”
