International Day for Nuclear Disarmament being marked today

KATHMANDU: The International Day for Nuclear Disarmament is being observed today in various countries around the world through awareness programs focused on the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.

This day has been observed annually since 2013, following a call by the United Nations. However, the first resolution on global nuclear disarmament was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly back in 1946. According to the UN, approximately 12,241 nuclear weapons still exist across several nations today.

On this occasion, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged all nuclear-armed states to commit to the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
