NC General Secretaries engage in talks with teachers

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma have stepped in to hold talks with the agitating Nepal Teachers’ Federation, which has been protesting for the past 25 days demanding a progressive School Education Act.

The move follows instructions from party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who on April 14 directed the two General Secretaries to become actively involved in addressing the demands of teachers.

Responding to the directive, Thapa and Sharma met with leading representatives of the teachers’ movement at the party’s central office and pledged to take necessary initiatives.

Later that evening, they joined a discussion at the party’s parliamentary office in Singha Durbar, bringing together education experts, party leaders, and stakeholders to formulate the party’s official stance on the ongoing protests.

The meeting was attended by Joint General Secretary Jeevan Pariyar, Education Department Chief Nain Singh Mahar, Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Poudail, and members of the bill subcommittee Dig Bahadur Limbu and Mahendra Raya Yadav.

A meeting on April 16 had already tasked Education Department Chief Mahar with coordinating disagreements on 28 contentious points of the Education Bill currently under discussion in the education subcommittee.

Teachers across the country have gathered in Kathmandu under the leadership of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, demanding that the government draft and pass a new School Education Act that aligns with previous agreements and ensures the rights and welfare of teachers, students, and school communities.
