Journalist threatened over news story, FNJ Madhesh demands accountability

DHANUSHA: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Madhesh Province, has strongly condemned Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhubaneswar Tiwari of the Dhanusha District Police Office for allegedly threatening Sumit Mishra, a correspondent for Khabarhub, over a news article published on April 25.

The report in question, titled “NC leader’s son linked to Bhatbhateni Superstore looting, released under political pressure“, led to SP Tiwari calling Mishra and allegedly pressuring him to come to the police office, issue an apology, and delete the news.

Mishra said the officer warned that a case would be filed against him and that he would be arrested if he failed to comply.

Journalist Mishra clarified that he did not author the story, which was published by the central newsroom of Khabarhub. The media outlet has backed this claim, stating that the content was issued under its editorial responsibility.

In a statement issued by FNJ Madhesh Province General Secretary Shailendra Mahato Kranti, the organization stated that law enforcement should seek remedies through legal channels such as the Press Council Nepal or courts, rather than resorting to intimidation.

“Threatening journalists like criminals is a serious interference in press freedom,” the statement read. FNJ called the SP’s behavior unacceptable and urged him to reflect on his actions. The organization warned that any threats or actions undermining media freedom will not be tolerated.

The incident has sparked concern across Nepal’s media fraternity, with renewed calls for accountability, protection of journalists, and respect for the constitutional right to free expression.
