Christmas being observed today

KATHMANDU: The Christian community across Nepal and around the world is celebrating Christmas today, marking the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity.

Jesus Christ is believed to have been born in Bethlehem, in present-day Israel, on December 25. For Christians, Christmas symbolizes the core teachings of Christ—salvation, love, and peace—which form the foundation of the faith.

The day is observed in multiple spiritual dimensions: as Love Day, honoring Christ’s message of compassion and service to humanity; Peace Day, reflecting his teachings on harmony and reconciliation; and Liberation Day, symbolizing spiritual salvation and freedom from sin.

Churches are holding special prayers, carol singing, and midnight masses, while families gather to exchange greetings and share festive meals. On the occasion, the government has declared a public holiday nationwide.

Major tourist hubs such as Thamel and Bouddha in Kathmandu, as well as Pokhara, Sauraha, and other destinations, are witnessing increased crowds as people, both locals and visitors, join in the celebrations, highlighting Christmas as not only a religious event but also a cultural and social festival in Nepal.
