Gen-Z activists warn PM Karki against ignoring youth sentiment, accuse government of favoring old parties

KATHMANDU: Gen-Z activist Miraj Dhungana has warned Prime Minister Sushila Karki not to act against the sentiment of young citizens, accusing the government of preparing to prioritize traditional political parties in the upcoming elections.

He cautioned that if old political forces return to power, the genuine demands of Gen-Z youths will once again be sidelined.

Dhungana issued the warning on Tuesday after police barred him and a group of Gen-Z activists from entering Singha Durbar, where they had gone to submit a memorandum outlining their concerns. The youths were attempting to reach the Prime Minister’s Office without prior permission when security personnel stopped them at the southern gate.

Police then chased the group up to the Hanumansathan bridge after they insisted on entering the administrative complex at any cost. The activists later staged a sit-in near Hanumansathan.

Dhungana said they were compelled to attempt entry after repeatedly requesting a meeting with Prime Minister Karki but receiving no response. He said the activists wanted to draw the government’s attention to the need for creating an environment where young people can work and build their future within the country, something he said requires a stable and accountable leadership.

He accused the government of ignoring the demands of Gen-Z youths and concentrating solely on election preparations. Dhungana further emphasized that the Prime Minister cannot overlook the expectations of the new generation and must respond to their calls for change.
