Chhath festival formally begins in Mithila

DHANUSHA: The Chhath festival has formally begun in the Mithila region from today. Ponds and riverbanks across Janakpurdham are being cleaned and decorated for the grand celebration.

Preparations are underway at major sites, including Gangasagar, Aragjasar, Dasharath Talau, Dhanush Sagar, Matkorarwa Pokhari, and other ghats, according to Hari Narayan Gupta, Chairperson of the Gangasagar Chhath Committee. He said cleaning and decoration works are progressing in full swing to ensure a smooth celebration this year.

Similarly, Birendra Karn, Secretary of the committee managing the Chhath site at Aragjasar, said preparations have been stepped up since the conclusion of Dashain. Coordination with the police has also been made to maintain law and order during the festival.

The festivals celebrated in the Mithilanchal region rely entirely on domestic production, with locals using wheat, rice, and other farm produce from their own fields for the rituals.

The four-day-long Chhath festival begins with Nahay-Khaye today. On the second day, Kharna, devotees observe a day-long fast and in the evening prepare kheer (rice pudding) as an offering to the deity before breaking their fast.

On the main day, Monday, various traditional delicacies such as thekuwa and bhuswa are prepared and offered to the setting sun. The festival concludes on Tuesday morning with prayers and offerings to the rising sun.
