Rabi Lamichhane challenges district court order at high court

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane has filed a petition at the Butwal bench of the High Court Dang, challenging a Rupandehi District Court order that denied him release on bank guarantee. On August 11, the Rupandehi District Court, presided over by Judge Narayan Prasad Sapkota, rejected Lamichhane’s request to be released on a bank guarantee despite him submitting documents worth Rs 27.48 million, his share of the Rs 109.9 million fraud case linked to Supreme Cooperative.

Vietnam’s VP Xuan pays courtesy call on President Paudel

Visiting Vice-President of Vietnam, Vo Thi Anh Xuan, paid a courtesy call on President Ramchandra Paudel at Sheetal Niwas on Sunday, with both sides stressing the need to deepen economic and cultural cooperation. President Paudel highlighted opportunities to enhance bilateral ties in trade, tourism, investment, and technology transfer. “The government of Nepal is willing to expedite collaboration in these areas,” said Kiran Pokharel, the President’s press advisor.

Will knock on every door of justice: Nikita Poudel

Nikita Poudel, wife of Rastriya Swatantra Party chair Rabi Lamichhane, on Monday filed an appeal at the Butwal bench of the High Court Dang after the Rupandehi District Court refused to release him on a bank guarantee worth Rs 274.8 million. High Court information officer Ram Bahadur Kunwar confirmed the petition was lodged against the district court’s order of July 26, which kept the former home minister in custody despite his wife depositing the full amount demanded as bail.

Dahal, Sharma vie for influence as both court Biplav

A quiet but intense competition has emerged within the Maoist camp over who can win over Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav,’ the general secretary of the Nepal Communist Party. On Monday morning, CPN (Maoist Centre) chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ visited Biplav at his Harisiddhi residence in Lalitpur for extended talks. According to Prachanda’s press advisor, Govinda Acharya, the two leaders discussed current political affairs, including the prospect of party unity and the broader socialist alliance.

Mechi Customs Office: Imports and exports decrease

Goods worth Rs 3.694 billion were imported through the eastern border post of Kakarbhitta in the first month of the current fiscal year 2025/26. This marks a decrease of Rs 192 million compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year 2024/25, according to Ishwor Kumar Humagain, information officer and customs officer at the Mechi Customs Office.

NC office bearers’ meeting to decide House committee chair candidate

The Nepali Congress (NC) has called a meeting of its office bearers for Monday morning at party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s private residence in Budhanilkantha. According to party insiders, the meeting will discuss the party’s candidate for the chair of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives, as well as the controversy surrounding Deputy Speaker Indira Ranamagar.

Strict pesticide tests push farmers out of Dharan market

A pesticide residue testing lab set up in Dharan to ensure safer vegetables and fruits for consumers has triggered unintended consequences as farmers and traders are avoiding the city’s main wholesale market, leading to a sharp decline in transactions. Seven months ago, the Rapid Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory Unit was established under the Central Agricultural Laboratory in Dharan with the goal of promoting pesticide-free or low-residue produce. However, the mandatory testing of vegetables and fruits has left farmers and traders from the eastern hills and Tarai regions alarmed.

Gold prices fall, silver inches up

The price of gold declined in the domestic market on Monday, according to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association. The price of fine gold dropped by Rs 300 per tola compared to Sunday. Gold, which was traded at Rs 197,500 per tola yesterday, is being traded at Rs 197,200 per tola today.

Empty EV microbus plunges into Sangla stream in Tarkeshwor

An electric microbus skidded off the road and fell into the Sangla stream in Tarkeshwor Municipality-7 on Monday morning. According to police, the Bagmati Province-registered microbus (Ba 06 001 J 0562) veered off the Kathmandu–Nuwakot road section and plunged into the stream.

Cholera cases up in Birgunj, source still unidentified

Cholera has begun spreading at the community level across Birgunj Metropolitan City, though health authorities have yet to identify the source of the outbreak. Cases have been reported in multiple wards since last Friday. According to Jaymod Thakur, Public Health Officer at the Parsa Health Office, 79 cholera-infected patients have been identified in Birgunj so far.

UML Darchula demands concrete action from govt over Lipulekh agreement

The CPN-UML in Darchula has demanded that the Nepali government take immediate and concrete steps to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and rights following the recent agreement between India and China to reopen the Lipulekh area as a trade point. Private school teachers join protests against Education Bill

Private school teachers took to the streets in Kathmandu on Monday, protesting provisions in the draft School Education Bill that they say undermine their rights and the sustainability of private institutions. The demonstrations at Maitighar Mandala come just as the Nepal Teachers’ Federation is preparing to launch a fresh round of protests from the same day. Carrying black banners, the private school teachers demanded that their concerns be addressed before the bill moves forward in parliament.

Sugarcane farmers continue protest demanding subsidy payment

Sugarcane farmers have staged demonstrations in Kathmandu demanding payment of government subsidies owed to them from the last fiscal year. Farmers affiliated with the Sugarcane Producers’ Federation and the Sugarcane Producers’ Committee gathered at Maitighar Mandala, urging authorities to release the outstanding subsidy at the rate of Rs 70 per quintal.

NEPSE rebounds after three-day slump

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) turned positive on Monday after three consecutive days of decline, gaining 21.30 points to settle at 2,761.26. Despite the rise in the benchmark, turnover fell to Rs 5.75 billion compared to Rs 6.54 billion in the previous session. A total of 179 companies recorded price gains, while 71 declined.
