KATHMANDU: Around 50 houses have been affected by a landslide in Ashtaman Tole, Jarankhu, Tarkeswar Municipality-6, Kathmandu, following land excavation carried out for house construction.
According to locals, four to five houses are at direct high risk, while the landslide has also disrupted movement in the area.
Locals said the problem began after a dozer was used to excavate land for house construction. Although excavation and construction work at the site has been ongoing for nearly two years, they complained that the work has progressed very slowly.
They also said walking along the road has become difficult due to the accumulation of mud and sand from the construction site. According to them, the soil from the construction area is not removed regularly, and the road is not cleaned properly.
Locals said the house under construction belongs to Kiran Rijal. They alleged that inadequate safety measures during construction have caused problems for residents of the tole. They have urged the construction team to immediately remove the accumulated soil, clear and manage the road, and take necessary measures to control the landslide.
Although around 50 houses have been affected, locals said four to five houses located near the landslide are at particularly high risk. They said there had been no such problem in the area before the land was excavated with a dozer and that the situation deteriorated after the excavation.
Locals have also been informing elected representatives about the situation. They said they repeatedly informed the ward chairperson about the landslide and the deteriorating condition of the road, providing photos and videos, but no concrete initiative has been taken so far. However, they said the deputy chief has assured them that the issue will be looked into.
Locals have urged the concerned authorities and the construction team to take immediate measures to control the landslide, protect the houses at risk, and ensure safe movement along the road.
