KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) has called a meeting of its office bearers for Monday morning at party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s private residence in Budhanilkantha.
According to party insiders, the meeting will discuss the party’s candidate for the chair of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives, as well as the controversy surrounding Deputy Speaker Indira Ranamagar.
The committee chair position has remained vacant since August 12, when lawmaker Ramhari Khatiwada resigned amid disputes over the cooling-off period provision in the Federal Civil Service Bill. Parliamentary regulations require the election of a new chair within 15 days of the resignation.
Meanwhile, NC and CPN-UML lawmakers have already collected signatures against Deputy Speaker Rana Magar, accusing her of breaching the code of conduct. However, the move has stirred internal rifts within the NC. The faction led by Dr. Shekhar Koirala, along with general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, has openly opposed the signature campaign initiated by the party leadership.
Monday’s meeting is expected to be crucial in finalizing the party’s strategy on both issues, which carry significant political weight in the parliamentary process.
