Nain Singh Mahar urges govt and parliament to address teachers’ demands

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress Central Education Department Chief, Nain Singh Mahar, has called on the government, parliament, and the high-level mechanism formed to support the government to take responsibility for addressing the demands of teachers.

In a statement issued on Friday, Mahar urged these bodies to be serious about resolving the issues faced by the education sector, particularly the teachers’ movement. He emphasized that the parliament must expedite the passing of the School Education Bill to provide a resolution for the ongoing demands of teachers.

Mahar, who is also a central member of the Nepali Congress, pointed out that while the constitution of Nepal mandated the formulation of necessary laws for its full implementation within three years, nearly 300 laws remain unformulated even after a decade. He criticized the lack of action by the parliament, attributing this to the irresponsibility of lawmakers.

“The delay in lawmaking has led to the mockery of the rule of law. The federal government, parliament, and lawmakers have been more focused on personal and party interests rather than fulfilling their official responsibilities,” Mahar said.

He urged the concerned authorities to prioritize the education sector and address the teachers’ grievances promptly.
