Rise in crime, banking fraud accounts for a quarter of cases



KATHMANDU: Crime rates in Nepal have seen a recent rise, with case registrations increasing by 3.92% in Poush compared to Mangsir, according to statistics released by the Nepal Police.

Data from the Nepal Police Headquarters reveals that 4,345 cases were registered in Poush, up from 4,181 in Mangsir.

Kathmandu recorded the highest number of cases at 1,363, while Karnali Province had the lowest at 151.

Other provinces reported 650 cases in Madhesh, 630 in Koshi, 546 in Lumbini, 429 in Bagmati, 306 in Gandaki, and 270 in Sudurpaschim.

The statistics indicate that Poush recorded 607 homicide-related cases, 424 suicide-related cases, and 695 cases categorized under organized or economic crimes.

Additionally, 669 cases were related to social crimes, 246 involved offenses against women and children, 211 were traffic-related, and 1,221 fell under miscellaneous legal issues.

Banking fraud accounted for 1,146 cases, nearly a quarter of the total criminal cases. Other prominent crimes included offenses against public interest, health, and safety with 610 cases, 213 cases related to drug abuse, 222 cases of fraud, 168 cases involving vehicle-related deaths, 150 cases of rape, 85 cases of attempted murder, and 41 homicide cases.

The increasing prevalence of banking fraud highlights emerging challenges in Nepal’s legal and financial sectors.
