JANAKPUR: The Nepali Congress (NC) has formally withdrawn its support from the Madhesh Province government, a decision announced after a parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday at the provincial party office. The party also decided to recall its ministers from the provincial cabinet.
NC Parliamentary Party leader and provincial president Krishna Prasad Yadav stated that the party’s support is institution-based rather than personal, and in light of recent developments, particularly the Janmat Party’s move to sit on the opposition benches, they have decided to retract their backing of the government.
Earlier, the Janmat Party had also withdrawn its support and informed both the provincial governor’s office and the provincial assembly secretariat. With the NC’s withdrawal, the Singh-led Janmat Party government is now in a minority in the Madhesh Provincial Assembly.
The Madhesh Province Assembly comprises 107 members, with the current party composition as follows: NC – 22, UML – 25 (including the Speaker), Janmat Party – 13, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party – 9, Janata Samajbadi Party, Nepal – 19, CPN (Maoist Centre) – 9, CPN (Unified Socialist) – 7, and one seat each for Nagarik Unmukti Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and Nepal Federal Socialist Party.
The Singh-led government was initially formed with the support of NC, UML, LSP, and Janmat Party, holding a total of 69 members. Following NC’s withdrawal, the government loses its majority in the assembly.
Commenting on the development, NC Parliamentary Party leader Yadav said, “We have formally withdrawn our support from this government. As the largest party in the assembly, the Nepali Congress now stakes a claim to form the government.”
