Maoist Centre welcomes govt’s decision to form probe committee on visa scam

KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Centre) has expressed gratitude to the government for forming a high-level investigation committee to probe the recent visit visa scandal.

Speaking during Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, party Deputy General Secretary Barshaman Pun thanked the government for following through on a two-point agreement made with the Maoist Centre on June 13 by forming the committee.

Pun acknowledged that while the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) is already conducting its own inquiry into the case, the newly formed government committee will examine broader issues concerning the public that fall outside the CIAA’s jurisdiction.

He expressed confidence that the committee would submit its report in line with public expectations, and stressed that the Maoist Centre, despite being a part of the ruling coalition, would continue to hold the government accountable in its role as a responsible stakeholder.

Pun also highlighted the importance of addressing issues affecting democracy. “Democracy and republicanism are among the best systems in the world,” he said, “but in order to make them stronger and more sustainable, we must resolve the challenges they face.”

The government formed the investigation committee under former Chief Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi following mounting pressure from opposition parties over alleged irregularities in the issuance of visit visas.
