KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has said that the government has formed a high-level probe committee to investigate and resolve all issues related to visit visas through comprehensive short- and long-term plans.
Addressing Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Lekhak informed lawmakers that the Cabinet has formed the committee under the leadership of former Chief Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi.
The committee will conduct an in-depth study, analysis, and investigation into the problems surrounding visit visas and immigration.
“We have already initiated some immediate reforms. However, those alone may not be enough,” said Lekhak. “That’s why the committee has been formed to look into the entire range of problems and recommend both short- and long-term measures.”
He added that the committee reflects the concerns raised by lawmakers in Parliament, and the government will act based on the committee’s recommendations.
“The report will provide suggestions for resolving the structural and procedural problems in our immigration system. We will move forward accordingly,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment.
Minister Lekhak also noted that he himself proposed the formation of the committee at the Cabinet meeting. The decision comes after a political agreement between the ruling coalition and the main opposition CPN (Maoist Centre) on June 13, which led to the end of a parliamentary deadlock.
