ACHHAM: Police have arrested Ramesh Bahadur Shahi and Devendra Shahi, residents of Panchadeval Binayak Municipality-4, on charges of caste-based discrimination.

The arrests were made following a complaint filed by Dinesh Nepali, a local Dalit, who accused the suspects of assault and mistreatment based on his caste.

The arrestees were remanded for 15 days by the district court, and an investigation into the incident has begun. According to Nepali’s complaint, the accused individuals, along with local residents Bakhat Shahi and others, allegedly harassed him due to his Dalit identity.

Nepali, who had been a witness in an ongoing murder trial at the Achham District Court, reported that the accused had threatened that Dalits would not be allowed to testify in the case. He further stated that the assault occurred within the premises of the district court.

In his complaint, Nepali expressed frustration that Bakhat Shahi, Ganesh Shahi, and others involved in the incident had not been arrested yet. The authorities have yet to make further comments on the investigation.
