Directly elected president is the need of the hour: Former PM Bhattarai

DANG: Former Prime Minister and Chair of Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti) Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has stated that Nepal’s economy and politics are in a serious crisis and called for a directly elected presidential system to resolve the current issues.

Speaking at a program in Ghorahi, Bhattarai emphasized that Nepal’s existing system has failed to function as expected, despite the constitution ensuring political rights. He argued that a directly elected executive would bring stability and institutionalize economic development.

“If the crisis is not addressed in time, instability will deepen,” he said. “The Constitution of 2015 ensured political rights, but it has failed to drive economic progress, leaving the people disillusioned.”

Bhattarai maintained that transitioning to a directly elected presidential system would provide long-term stability and accelerate development.
