Madhesh govt to withdraw controversial Language Bill

JANAKPUR: The Madhesh government is preparing to withdraw the Language Bill, 2025, following widespread controversy.

The Provincial Assembly Secretary, Basu Prasad Koirala, confirmed that the bill’s withdrawal is on the agenda for the meeting.

Education and Culture Minister Rani Kumari Tiwari had presented the bill earlier, proposing Maithili, Bhojpuri, Bajjika, Hindi, and English as working languages of the province, in addition to Nepali.

However, the bill faced significant opposition during discussions in the Provincial Assembly.

On Thursday, lawmakers disrupted proceedings, demanding the inclusion of their respective languages as working languages of the province.

The controversy erupted just a day after the bill was tabled, leading to heated debates and a halt in parliamentary discussions. Minister Tiwari is expected to formally withdraw the bill to resolve the impasse.
