Top Bahadur Rayamajhi returns to prison

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi has returned to prison after escaping during last month’s violent protests.

Rayamajhi, who had been in custody at the Sundhara Central Jail in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, surrendered back to prison on Tuesday. He was among the thousands of inmates who fled when protesters attacked the facility on September 9 amid the Gen-Z movement demonstrations.

Rayamajhi, suspended from his post as UML secretary, faces charges of involvement in a racket that allegedly collected millions of rupees from Nepali citizens by falsely promising to resettle them in the United States and other countries as Bhutanese refugees.

Authorities said around 3,300 prisoners escaped when the jail was stormed, leaving only about 500 inmates inside. More than 100 escapees, including Rayamajhi, have since returned or been recaptured.
