Two die from diarrheal symptoms in Parsa

BIRGUNJ: Two patients showing symptoms of diarrheal illness have died in Parsa district, health authorities confirmed on Saturday.

According to Dr. Udaya Narayan Singh, spokesperson for Narayani Hospital, one patient died today during treatment before tests for cholera could be conducted. Another patient receiving care at Birgunj Health Care died on Friday. While diarrhea has been confirmed as the cause, officials said it has yet to be established whether cholera was involved.

In response, the District Health Crisis Management Committee has directed all hospitals in Birgunj to allocate dedicated beds for treating diarrhea and suspected cholera cases. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Acting Chief District Officer Suman Kumar Karki.

The committee also decided to launch household-level awareness campaigns on diarrhea prevention, mobilizing health workers, volunteers, and local bodies. Birgunj Metropolitan City has been asked to strengthen sanitation drives, while security forces, political parties, the Red Cross, and NGOs will coordinate in providing essential supplies and public awareness activities.

Officials said the measures aim to contain a possible outbreak of cholera, caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium.
