Deepak Giri criticizes free visa provision for NRNs

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress MP and central committee member Deepak Giri has expressed his opposition to the provision of granting free visas to Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs), calling it wrong and urging the government to rectify it.

Speaking to media in Kathmandu, Giri said requiring NRNs to apply for visas to visit their homeland contradicts the spirit of the constitution, which grants them NRN citizenship. NRN leaders have also criticized the government’s recent ordinance offering free visas for ten years to NRN citizenship holders.

Addressing the government’s performance, Giri noted its slow progress but argued against frequent government changes, citing the potential for political instability.

On the issue of cooperative fraud cases, Giri called for justice for victims, highlighting that their savings should be returned without exception, regardless of political affiliations.

Giri refrained from commenting on the ongoing legal proceedings involving Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane, who faces fraud charges.
