Lawyers outraged as judge refuses to detain Rabi Lamichhane
Government lawyers have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the decision of Judge Pralhad Kumar Yogi of the Rupandehi District Court not to detain Rabi Lamichhane, chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), in connection with the Supreme Cooperative embezzlement case.
During the ongoing hearing of the case in Bhairahawa, Judge Yogi on Wednesday released Lamichhane under the custody of his wife, Nikita Poudel, instead of sending him to detention for pretrial proceedings.
Government lawyers have raised concerns over this decision, arguing that Lamichhane should have been detained, as is customary in such cases, rather than being granted special treatment.
PM Oli resting in Baluwatar due to illness
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is resting at his official residence in Baluwatar after falling ill with a throat problem, doctors have confirmed.
The Prime Minister, who attended a late-night party on Tuesday after a secretariat meeting of the CPN-UML, developed a hoarse voice, prompting medical advice to rest.
Despite resting on Wednesday, his condition did not improve, leading to the cancellation of all his official engagements for Thursday.
UML takes action against leaders supporting Bhim Rawal
The UML has initiated disciplinary actions against several leaders and activists who supported former Vice Chair Dr Bhim Rawal, who was expelled from the secretariat meeting on December 26, 2024.
Six leaders from Rawal’s home district of Achham have been targeted, accused of undermining the party’s interests.
The district committee took action against these leaders for supporting Rawal’s ‘Matribhumi Jagran Abhiyan’ (Motherland Awareness Campaign), which the party leadership sees as contrary to its policies.
Nepal’s upcoming budget to face significant reduction amid financial constraints
The government is set to announce a significant reduction in the current fiscal year’s budget, with the total estimated decrease expected to be at least Rs 250 billion. This decision, primarily due to challenges in mobilizing resources and managing expenditure, will be detailed in the upcoming mid-term budget review report to be released by Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel by the end of February.
Fire in Mahabharat Community Forest spreads in Kavrepalanchok

Over two-thirds candidates fail Nepal Medical Council license exam
The results of the 71st license examination conducted by the Nepal Medical Council have raised concerns, with over two-thirds of examinees failing. The two-day examination, held at the Nepal Institute of Engineering Studies in Pulchowk, saw a poor performance, as revealed in the results published yesterday evening.
Out of 844 candidates, including those from MBBS and BDS programs, only 262 (31.04%) passed, leaving 562 (68.96%) failing.
Madhesh Provincial government proposes bill to recognize five official languages
The Madhesh Provincial Government has introduced a bill in the Provincial Assembly to officially recognize multiple languages for administrative and official use, nearly seven years after the province’s establishment.
The bill, presented by Minister for Education and Culture Rani Kumari Tiwari, proposes that languages such as Maithili, Bhojpuri, Bajjika, Hindi, and English be included as official languages alongside Nepali in the province.
Families of Saurya Airlines crash victims demand justice
Families of the victims of the Saurya Airlines plane crash have voiced their dissatisfaction with the lack of justice and accountability six months after the tragedy. On July 24, 2024, a Bombardier CRJ200LR operated by Saurya Airlines crashed shortly after take-off from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport during a repositioning flight. The incident claimed the lives of 18 people.
Martyr’s week commemorations begin in Kathmandu
Martyr’s Week commenced today, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy in Nepal. Observed annually from January 23 to 29 (Magh 10 to 16), the event is organized in coordination with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).
On the opening day, Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, alongside other KMC officials and locals, paid homage to Shukraraj Shastri by laying wreaths at his statue in Teku, the site of his execution.
