Detention hearing on Supreme Cooperative fraud to begin today for Lamichhane

RUPANDEHI: The detention hearing for Rabi Lamichhane, chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, regarding the misappropriation of funds in the Supreme Savings and Credit Cooperative, is set to begin today in Rupandehi.

Lamichhane appeared at the Rupandehi District Court yesterday to provide his statement. His deposition was completed in the courtroom of Judge Pralhad Kumar Yogi.

The court released Lamichhane on a conditional basis, requiring his presence at the court today at 10 a.m. for the detention hearing.

He was temporarily released under the guardianship of his wife, Nikita Poudel, and his legal representative.

Earlier, while in police custody in Kaski, Lamichhane was brought to Butwal in November 12 to give his statement after receiving an arrest warrant.

The case involves the alleged embezzlement of Rs 861.8 million belonging to 1,831 depositors of the cooperative.

A total of 28 individuals have been charged in connection with the fraud. While the case was first filed on last April 3, Lamichhane’s name was added in a supplementary complaint.

According to the police, Rs 142.9 million was transferred from the cooperative to Gorkha Media Network Pvt. Ltd., while Rs 20 million was found to have been taken as a loan under Lamichhane’s name, prompting the complaint against him.

Previously, Lamichhane secured bail by depositing Rs 6.5 million in Kaski and Rs 6 million in Kathmandu.
