Youth stage protest at Maitighar demanding all-party government, police detain demonstrators
Youth activists, including Miraj Dhungana, staged a protest at Maitighar on Monday demanding the formation of an all-party government before holding elections. The protest saw the participation of Rabi Kiran Hamal, Nicholas Bhusal, among others. Demonstrators argued that elections should only be conducted after the formation of an all-party government to ensure good governance and political stability.
Oli meets Deuba as all-party talks continue at Singha Durbar
While an all-party meeting called by Prime Minister Sushila Karki was underway at Singha Durbar on Monday, CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli visited Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at his residence in Maharajgunj, making the political timing of the meeting significant. Oli sent UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet, elected from the party’s 11th general convention, to represent the party at the Singha Durbar meeting, a move seen as a political message in itself. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel was seen accompanying Oli during the Maharajgunj visit.
High-level commission begins work on transport sector reforms
A high-level commission formed by the government to investigate and reform the transport sector has formally begun its work. The commission was established following a Supreme Court mandamus issued on Mangsir 3, directing the government to address disorder in public transportation and rising road accidents. The writ petition related to the issue was filed on Bhadra 5, 2081. To implement the court order, the commission started its work on Monday after setting up its office. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the commission came into operation after a notice was published in the Nepal Gazette on Sunday, in line with the Cabinet decision of Mangsir 22. The commission has been formed under Clause 3(2) of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1969.
Parties divided over polls as RSP seeks security guarantee, UML doubts feasibility
Sharp divisions among political parties surfaced on Monday over the feasibility of holding the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026, as the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) demanded a firm guarantee of peace and security, while the CPN-UML openly questioned whether elections are possible under the current situation. Speaking at a discussion on election law and management convened by Prime Minister Sushila Karki at Singha Durbar, RSP leader Shishir Khanal said his party supports holding elections on the government-declared date but stressed that security is a non-negotiable precondition.
MCA-Nepal signs two contracts for road maintenance project
MCA-Nepal signed two essential contracts totaling USD 23.66 million for road maintenance under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Nepal Compact jointly representing a major step forward for the Compact’s goal of advancing Nepal’s long-term economic growth and development. MCA-Nepal signed on Monday a USD 20 million contract with Sharma–Kumar Joint Venture for the Road Upgrading Works using Full-Depth Reclamation & Superpave Technology on the Dhankhola to Lamahi section of the East-West Highway, as part of implementing the Road Maintenance Project under the MCC Nepal Compact.
NEPSE falls 13.88 points, turnover declines
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index declined by 13.88 points on Monday, closing at 2,581.21 points. The market remained in the red throughout the trading session, while total turnover also dropped. Daily transaction volume fell to Rs 3.51 billion, down from Rs 4.52 billion recorded in the previous session. Out of the listed companies, share prices of 54 companies increased, while 200 declined and five remained unchanged.
Microfinance, loan-sharking victims launch Kathmandu-focused protest from today
Victims of microfinance institutions and loan-sharking have launched a Kathmandu-centered protest from Monday, demanding justice and relief from financial exploitation. The protest has been jointly organized by the Land Rights Movement, the Nepal Microfinance and Financial Exploitation Struggle Committee, and the Nepal Farmers and Workers Movement Against Loan-Sharking. As part of the protest, participants began a rally from Balkhu, marching through Tripureshwar and Shahid Gate before holding a corner assembly at Shanti Batika.
Schools closed across Kathmandu Valley after little-known student union announces education strike
Schools across the Kathmandu Valley have been shut down following the announcement of an education strike by the Janapakshiya Bidhyarthi Union, Nepal, a student group unfamiliar to many. The student union announced the strike citing an 18-point set of demands. After the strike call, schools were left in confusion over whether to continue operations or close, ultimately leading to the closure of educational institutions across the Valley. As a result, students and teachers who had already left for school or reached school premises were left in a state of uncertainty.
Nepali Army reaffirms loyalty to Constitution amid debate
The Nepali Army (NA) has reiterated that it acted strictly within constitutional limits during the September 8 and 9 Gen-Z protests, emphasizing respect for civilian authority, restraint in the use of force, and a focus on protecting lives amid growing public debate over its role. In a statement, the Nepali Army said that creating an environment for dialogue among stakeholders during crisis management is the responsibility of the concerned authorities and should be done at the earliest to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Police detained several Gen-Z activists, including Nicholas Bhusal, during a protest at Maitighar on Monday organized against the interim government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The demonstrators, led by Miraj Dhungana, had gathered to demand the resignation of the Prime Minister, accusing the government of failing to address the previous demands of the Gen-Z movement. Police said the protest was conducted without official permission.
Three domestic airports shut due to adverse weather
Three domestic airports have been closed due to adverse weather conditions, according to Kathmandu Airport Office. Spokesperson of the Kathmandu Airport Office, Rinji Sherpa, said that Bhairahawa, Janakpur and Simara airports are currently shut. Dhangadhi Airport, which was also affected earlier, has resumed operations recently. Sherpa said regular flights are operating at other airports across the country.
Consumer Protection Department fines two firms Rs 50,000 each for violating consumer law
The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has fined two industries/firms Rs 50,000 each for failing to comply with provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2018. According to the department, the action was taken after inspections found that the firms had not maintained mandatory price lists and registration documents at their business premises, as required by law.
Gold, silver prices hit all-time highs in Nepal
Prices of both gold and silver hit all-time highs in the domestic market on Monday, continuing their upward trend. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of gold has been fixed at Rs 261,700 per tola on Monday. This is an increase of Rs 3,400 per tola compared to the previous day. The new rate has broken the record set just a week ago. Last Monday, gold prices had surged to Rs 260,700 per tola, surpassing all previous records at the time.
Gagan Thapa announces candidacy for Nepali Congress presidency in 15th general convention
Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has announced his candidacy for party president in the upcoming 15th general convention, saying the convention must be held on time and warning that the party will not go to elections without completing it. Interacting with party leaders and cadres of Kathmandu-4 at a program held at Dhumbarahi Banquet on Monday, Thapa said he would contest for the post of party president and expressed confidence in winning the leadership race.
NC and UML to move Supreme Court today with signatures of 141 former MPs seeking House restoration
Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are set to move the Supreme Court today with the signatures of 141 former lawmakers, demanding the restoration of the dissolved House of Representatives. The two largest parties in the dissolved House, and partners in the pre–Gen-Z movement coalition government, are jointly approaching the apex court with signatures from a majority of former Members of Parliament, seeking judicial intervention for the reinstatement of Parliament.
