Mha Puja being observed by Newar community today

KATHMANDU: Today, on the day of Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the Newar community is observing Mha Puja, a ritual dedicated to the worship of the self. This unique tradition, celebrated annually, is an integral part of the Tihar festival among Newars.

According to theologian Prof. Dr. Ramchandra Gautam, the human soul is regarded as the most significant and powerful entity. “The tradition of Mha Puja reflects the classical belief that self-realization and inner satisfaction are key to a meaningful life,” he explains.

It is believed that when one honors and nurtures the self, it pleases the gods and goddesses as well, inviting blessings and fulfillment.

Rooted in this deep philosophical and religious understanding, Mha Puja is observed with reverence in areas with significant Newar populations, including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Banepa, Dhulikhel, Panauti, Bahrabise, and Chautara.
