National Assembly passes Citizenship Amendment Bill

KATHMANDU: The National Assembly (NA) has unanimously passed the Nepal Citizenship (Second Amendment) Bill, 2081.

During Friday’s session, Speaker of the National Assembly Narayan Prasad Dahal announced the bill’s approval. The bill had been received from the House of Representatives along with the report of the Legislative Management Committee and was tabled by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak for final passage.

Addressing concerns raised by lawmakers during earlier discussions, Home Minister Lekhak stated that the bill had been made more progressive, practical, and transparent through the parliamentary process, compared to the original version submitted by the government.

He described the bill’s passage as a historic step forward, emphasizing that it enshrines the principle that lineage can be traced through the mother as well—marking a significant shift in citizenship policy.
