Social Security Fund distributes over Rs 2.84 billion in interest

KATHMANDU: The Social Security Fund (SSF) has distributed interest earnings to contributors under its Old Age Protection Scheme for the fiscal year 2024/25.

According to SSF spokesperson Dr. Roshan Koju, a total of Rs 2.84 billion in interest has been deposited into the accounts of 2,379,585 registered contributors.

The fund provided an annual interest rate of 5.5 percent on savings until March 17, and five percent from March 18 through the end of the fiscal year on July 16.

The SSF currently has 23,90,141 registered contributors. This figure includes individuals from the formal employment sector, Nepali migrant workers, and a small number of contributors from the informal sector and self-employment.

So far, the fund has collected Rs 86.86 billion in total contributions. It has also paid out Rs 15.77 billion in claims under various schemes that offer benefits related to medical treatment, health and maternity, accidents and disability, dependent family members, and old age protection.

According to Dr. Koju, the interest distribution marks another important step in institutionalizing social security in Nepal and strengthening trust in the contributory model the country has been building over recent years.
