NC active membership renewal in limbo

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress’s Active Membership Management Committee has decided to extend the deadline for renewing active memberships until mid-Asar (late June to early July).

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by General Secretary and committee coordinator Gagan Kumar Thapa on Wednesday.

Committee member and central leader Prakash Rasaili ‘Snehi’ said that if the renewal process is not completed by the new deadline, the system at the party’s central office will be automatically locked.

Technicians are currently being deployed across all 77 districts to facilitate data entry for the renewal process.

The distribution of new active memberships is scheduled to begin from mid-July. According to Rasaili, priority will be given based on voting performance in recent local, provincial, and federal elections, with a focus on inclusivity—particularly among Dalits, women, Madhesis, and other marginalized groups.

However, disputes over active membership renewal remain unresolved in 10 districts. The committee, under General Secretary Thapa’s leadership, plans to visit the affected areas to mediate.

If local resolution fails, the matter will be escalated to the central level for further discussion. In the absence of consensus, the issue will be addressed through political negotiation with the party’s top leadership.

“In the first phase, we will talk to both sides in the field. If agreement isn’t reached, we’ll handle it centrally in the presence of the General Secretary. If needed, we’ll involve senior leaders to reach a political understanding,” Rasaili explained.

Initially, the committee had set a deadline for mid-March and instructed six levels of the party’s working committees to complete membership renewals. As that deadline passed unmet, it was extended to April 15.

With the latest extension, the committee aims to resolve all controversies before the party’s 15th General Convention.

The committee comprises General Secretary Thapa and central members Sita Gurung, Yogendra Chaudhary, and Prakash Rasaili (Snehi). It was formed with the goal of ensuring that the upcoming convention is free from disputes surrounding active memberships.
