Govt to present bill on regulation of social media in Parliament



KATHMANDU: The government has received approval from the Council of Ministers to present the “Bill on the Operation, Use, and Regulation of Social Sites, 2025” in Parliament.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, announced this in a press conference on January 22, revealing the decisions made in the Cabinet meeting held on January 20.

Minister Gurung also shared that the Council of Ministers has recommended to the President to summon the session of both houses of the Federal Parliament on January 31 at 1 pm. The President has already confirmed the session.

In addition to the bill on social media regulation, the Cabinet approved the Procedure on Equalization Grant, 2025, and the Procedure on Special Grant, 2025.

It also decided to annul the Procedures on Co-Financing, 2021, and the Procedures on Cash Transfer to Absolutely Poor Families Affected by Covid, 2022, under the Ministry of Finance.

The government has also nominated Joint Secretary Shree Krishna Nepal to the position of Alternative Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Furthermore, it has approved a private sector initiative for the development and operation of Blocks B and C of the Simara Special Economic Zone through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The Cabinet also approved the acquisition of around 30 ropanis of land at Tinau Rural Municipality, Ward No. 3, Palpa district, for the Butwal Water Supply Project.

Additionally, the Council of Ministers approved the participation of Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya in an international conference in New Delhi, India, from January 23-24, and the National Voters Day and Republic Day Parade events scheduled for January 25 and January 26, respectively.
