Those who fled amid Gen-Z unrest are now back: Home Minister

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has stated that individuals accused of corruption and suppression during the Gen-Z protests, who had reportedly fled abroad, are now reappearing within Nepal.

Aryal made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting at Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s official residence in Baluwatar with victims of the September 8–9 protests. The discussion focused on the protesters’ concerns regarding officials allegedly involved in corrupt activities and attempts to conceal illicit assets.

“Those who attempted to flee and hide are now coming forward, asserting that they are present in Nepal,” Aryal said.

Earlier, Aryal had cited former Energy Minister Deepak Khadka, a Nepali Congress leader, claiming that he had left for the United States. However, Khadka recently appeared at his residence in Kathmandu, which was set ablaze during the Gen-Z protests, and held a press conference challenging the government.

Khadka explained that he had traveled to Delhi for his wife’s medical treatment and had contracted dengue himself. He returned to Nepal on Sunday via Bagdogra Airport and reached Bhadrapur by land before flying to Kathmandu later that evening.
