Six Nepali Congress leaders hold talks in Chaksibari

KATHMANDU: Six leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC), widely seen as loyal to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, have resumed internal discussions amid growing calls for leadership change.

The group met on Sunday morning at the residence of leader Prakash Man Singh in Chaksibari, where they discussed party strategies ahead of the 15th General Convention.

Participants in the meeting included former Vice Presidents Gopal Man Shrestha and Bimalendra Nidhi, along with Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Dr. Shashank Koirala, and Prakash Man Singh. Also in attendance was party spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat.

The leaders are said to be formulating a common position on several pressing issues, including the demand raised by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma for an early special general convention and a change in party leadership. Thapa and Sharma had put forward the proposal during a recent meeting held in Sanepa.

Dr. Mahat, a vocal supporter of President Deuba, had criticized Thapa and Sharma earlier the same day, expressing disapproval over what he described as their political attack on the party president while he was still recovering in the hospital.

Sources say Sunday’s meeting also focused on assessing the party’s position in the aftermath of the Gen-Z movement, which has shaken the national political landscape and prompted internal calls for reform within the Nepali Congress.

The leaders aim to build consensus on how to approach the upcoming General Convention and respond to the growing internal demand for change, particularly from younger factions of the party.
